On July 18, 2017, a number of academics and activists in Chiang Mai have been accused of violating Order of the Head of NCPO No.3/2558. They participated in the International Conference on Thai Study and showed sign saying 'Academic Conference is not Military Camp' and took photos. 
 
Five people including the organizers, journalist and activist were summoned to report and acknowledge the charge on 21 August 2016. They denied all charges.
 
The case went to Chiang Mai Sub District Court where the court conducted plaintiff witness exmination. During the trial, the NCPO issued the Head of NCPO order no.22/2018 to abolish the ban on political gatherings. The court then canceled witness hearings and read verdict on 25 December 2018 dismissed the case.
